Pokémon TCG Shrouded Fable: Best New Cards (2024)

Throughout the year, each of the major trading card game franchises releases several new products to keep their fans interested in the game. From starter decks and booster packs to cosmetic upgrades like sleeves and playmats, players seek the best new releases to add to the enjoyment of their fandom. The most prominent way that players enjoy the game is through collecting cards, and nowhere is this more true than in the case of the Pokémon Trading Card Game.

Shrouded Fable is the newest sort for the Pokémon Trading Card Game. Released on August 2, 2024, Shrouded Fable is a smaller side set for Pokémon, as it features 99 cards (64 normal rarity and 35 secret rare variants). Despite the set's small size, fans are clamoring to get new cards like the first ex-printings of the Loyal Three (Ogidogi, Munkidori and Fezandipiti), as well as potent trainer cards like Cassiopeia and Janine's Secret Art. Overall, Shrouded Fable is a great set for the Pokémon Trading Card Game and fans can't wait to get their hands on the new cards.

Sometimes, in trading card games, a card is so good that players will clamor for a reprint at a higher rarity to add to their decks. While this is more common in card games without as many alternate rarities, Pokémon occasionally does this for the best cards in meta-contending decks. The best example of this in Shrouded Fable is Munkidori.

Originally released in Twilight Masquerade as a rare, Munkidori has routinely been seen in Gardevoir ex decks since its release. Therefore, this illustration rare printing of the Psychic-type staple makes perfect sense and is an amazing way for Gardevoir players to rarity bump their decks.

Item cards rarely fetch a high price on the secondary market, but gold rare cards (also known as hyper rare in Scarlet and Violet) are one of the few exceptions. While there have been more pricey item cards in recent memory, those cards usually have more of a playability factor than Powerglass. Cards like Hyper Rare Buddy-Buddy Poffin (Market Price: $33.18) and Rare Candy (Market Price: $10.37) are staple cards in most decks, so their high price tags make some sense. However, Powerglass seems like an experimental tool card with niche applications.

Powerglass states that a player can attach an energy card from the discard pile to the active Pokémon it is attached to at the end of the turn. While this seems like good turn-one energy acceleration, it only has an impact in decks that have 2 energy attacks, like Roaring Moon box. However, that deck uses cards like Professor Sada's Research and Dark Patch, which accelerate energy far more efficiently. While Powerglass is undeniably one of the prettiest item cards in recent memory, it is more than likely just a binder piece for most collectors.

Everything We Know About Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket (So Far)

The Pokémon Trading Card Game is about to get a mobile update, and there's lots more for fans to learn about this unusual experience.

Sometimes, in trading card games, a deck will fall out of the meta because other decks eclipse it. However, sometimes those decks come back with a vengeance and become even stronger than they were before. This is especially the case with Charizard ex (Market Price: $3.80) decks, which have come back into the meta with the release of Dusknoir in Shrouded Fable.

While players will likely never use Dusknoir's attack, as it has a steep cost and is not played in psychic decks, its ability allows players to secure knockouts more easily. When Dusknoir uses its ability, players can place 13 damage counters (130 damage) on any one of the opponent's Pokémon. This allows Charizard ex to secure early knockouts instead of waiting for the opponent to get the upper hand. Players should expect to see this card in Charizard ex variants until something better competes for the deck slot.

Not every card in a trading card game has to be meta-relevant for players to want them. While this is the case for games like Yu-Gi-Oh, the Pokémon Trading Card Game markets itself as a collectible card game as well as one that can be played by people of all ages. The most valuable cards in a set are often not important to competitive players, but they hold great value to casual fans. That is precisely the case with Houndoom in Shrouded Fable.

The lack of a great fire deck in the current Pokémon Trading Card Game meta makes Houndoom an unplayable card. Even if there was a good fire deck, this card would likely not see any play, as it is weaker than other Fire-type Pokémon like Radiant Charizard. Regardless, Houndoom is a beautiful illustration rare that many players would be thrilled to see in their Shrouded Fable pulls.

While Shrouded Fable is a smaller side set for the Pokémon Trading Card game, that does not mean that it is not filled with exciting new cards and strategies for players to experiment with. The most intriguing of these strategies is a deck focused on the Loyal Three (Munkidori, Ogidogi and Fezandipiti). This Dark-type deck is focused on players poisoning their own Pokémon to deal more damage to the opponent. One of the ways that the deck counteracts this weakness is through Munkidori ex.

Munkidori ex has a decent attack that is strong enough to knock out most one prize Pokémon. The true power of this card is unlocked when Pecharunt ex is on the board. This combination turns Munkidori ex into a 210 HP 1 prize Pokémon, which throws off the prize trade for the opponent. Only time will tell the meta relevancy of this strategy, but Munkidori ex is certainly an interesting card for players to play in their decks.

8 Things You Never Knew About The Pokémon Trading Card Game

Though the Pokémon Trading Card Game has been out for decades, there are still some facts players might not know about.

Most of the important cards in Shrouded Fable are either Dark-type or Psychic-type Pokémon, and Pecharunt ex is no exception. While this card is not a member of the Loyal Three, it is a perfect pairing with the strategy as it helps set up Ogidogi to deal massive damage and secure easy knockouts on most 2 prize Pokémon, with the notable exception of Charizard ex.

Pecharunt ex's ability allows players to switch one of their benched Dark-type Pokémon with their active Pokémon, and then poison the new active Pokémon. While this may seem detrimental, it benefits the strategy phenomenally, as Ogidogi's damage is massively buffed when it is poisoned. Overall, Pecharunt ex is a great card that adds an extra level of strategy to the Loyal Three deck.

4 Ogidogi ex is The Loyal Three's Main Attacker

A deck is only as good as its main attacker, and luckily the Loyal Three have a very reliable one. Ogidogi ex is one of the more intriguing cards in Shrouded Fable, as both of its attacks are great and allow the deck to have amazing flexibility.

Ogidogi ex's first attack, "Poisonous Musculature", allows Ogidogi ex to attach two energy to itself from the deck and then poison itself. This sets it up to attack with "Chain Crazed" on the following turn, which deals 260 damage and can easily knock out most 2 prize Pokémon. When used in combination with Pecharunt ex, players can always make sure that their Ogidogi ex is poisoned, thus making it easy to deal maximum damage with the Loyal Three strategy.

Earthen Vessel (Hyper Rare)

Most of the deck in the Pokémon Trading Card game is made up of item and supporter cards, so it is important to make sure that each of those cards has an immense impact when it is played. One of the best meta staple item cards is Earthen Vessel.

Earthen Vessel allows players to discard one card from their hand to add 2 basic energy cards from their deck to their hand. This can help decks get the specific kind of energy they need at any time as well as set up the discard pile for later plays. Because of this card's great utility, it is featured in many decks, so a hyper-rare reprint is a great pull for any player.

A Pokémon card can be too powerful or too confusing to be viable in TCG tournaments. Other times, something about its design can be problematic.

Many side sets for the Pokémon Trading Card Game function only as collector's sets and often lack staple cards the competitive players will want to use in their decks. Luckily, this isn't the case with Shrouded Fable, as Fezandipiti ex is one of the better staple cards in recent memory.

Players will rarely use Fezandipiti's attack, but its ability is where it truly shines. During the turn after a player's Pokémon is knocked out, players can use Fezandipiti ex's "Flip the Script" ability to draw 3 cards. This makes losing a Pokémon feel a lot less bad and allows players to draw cards without having to use important item cards.

$95.59

Cassiopeia (Uncommon)

Supporter

Supporter cards tend to be some of the most expensive high-rarity cards in the Pokémon Trading Card Game as they portray some of the most iconic trainers from the video games. Shrouded Fable is no exception, as the chase card in the set is Cassiopeia. Luckily, Cassiopeia's phenomenal art is not the only thing that makes the card pricey, as its ability is also great.

When Cassiopeia is the only card left in a player's hand, they can play the card to add any two cards from their deck to their hand. This ability is especially potent, as sometimes the only thing separating a player from victory and defeat is two specific cards. While this card is a staple, it competes with many other potent trainer cards, so players should not expect to see this card in most decks.
